151. Describe situations you can recall when inadequate communication skills led to decreased opportunities in your life.

Standing before parole board, talking with educators here early on in my time in forrest city. Not being able to communicate well hindered my opportunities to prosper in both situations..

152. Describe situations where stronger communication skills may have enhanced your prospects for success.

Being interviewed by educators here. If I had stronger communication skills I could have gotten a better job position in the pass.

153. What do communication skills mean to you?

It means being able to communicate by words or writing, with the ability to touch your listener’s heart.

154. In what types of ways can improving communication skills assuage the burden of confinement?

Through confinement I can still grow and learn to express myself properly.

155. What types of influence do communication skills have on an individual’s prospects for success upon release?

Being able to communicate well will give you favor in the sight of many upon release. They will see you are well learned. How a man speaks tells a lot about him.

156. How can developing communication skills open opportunities through imprisonment?

It can help build family relationships. Meeting new people it can help  build strong relationships.

157. In what ways can an individual take clearly-defined, measurable steps toward improving communication skills?

Taking public speaking classes, reading and writing more. Communication skills are one of my weakest areas.

158. In what ways have you taken measurable, deliberate steps to improve your communication skills?

Getting definitions of words that I don’t know. Reading more and acknowledge the fact that I do need help in that area..

159. What value do enhanced communication skills offer to a prospective employer?

It helps you to represent that job well which makes your employer look good.

160. How can a prisoner convey the extent of his communication skills and his personal investment to improve such skills?

By preaching and teaching math classes I come in contact with a lot of people.

161. How does the prison experience influence an individual’s development of communication skills?

You meet all kinds of people from all over this world. Many are very educated and that kind of company can build your skills to communicate.

162. In what ways do developing communicating skills resemble the development of physical fitness?

It is a daily work that will pay off big time in a long run, just as bodily exercise does. what comes out your mouth changes how you look and how people see you.

163. What does it mean to read with a purpose?

Reading material that can build you up. that will help you toward your goals. That’s reading with a purpose…

164. Describe the pattern of books you have read throughout your term in prison. What kind are they and why do you read them?

The Holy Bible!! Also any material that can help me grow as a man of God. I do read with a purpose! That is to know the God I serve.

165. In what ways do books you read prepare you for success upon release?

The bible changes and will change the way you see yourself. When I change everything else around me changes. As the lord changes me, I walk into my success….

166. When you consider the amount of free time available to you on a typical day, how do you determine the most effective ways to use it toward preparations for success?

As a pastor I deal with people here daily.I’m learning more and more how to walk in love and in humility. Prayer and bible study is my priority here.

167. In what ways do you work to improve your dexterity with language, using words, sentences, and paragraphs to communicate ideas?

This is a difficult area for me. But I read and write, trying to learn new words by using them and getting a definition of them. It is helpful but a slow process for me.

168. How would you describe the argot of the imprisoned class?

It varies, based on education and time on the inside. I want to speak in the way that I will speak when I am home.

169. In what ways does the jargon of imprisonment compare of contrast with the language in the society you expect to encounter upon release?

There are no comparisons. Those that are in society speak a total different language than we do in prison. We must come up to that standard by educating ourselves with communication skills.

170. What does an individual speaker’s enunciation convey to his listeners?

It shows his level of education and his ability to be a good speaker. It also tells a lot  about that individual.

171. In what ways do an individual’s grooming habits or manner of dress communicate his values?

It shows a lot about a persons character and how he lives. I said he but that goes for women too..

172. To what extent does documenting a prison journey communicate an individual’s commitment to success upon release?

It shows people  how you dealt with the different problems that you faced during your prison sentence. That shows a lot about your character.

One of the exercises Michael embraced to develop his communication strategy included writing book reports. In Earning Freedom, he wrote that books opened opportunities that contributed in meaningful, measurable ways to prepare him for triumph over the obstacles he expected to encounter. Each book had a purpose, and to stay on course, he used the following format to write his book reports:

  • How I came across the book (title of book):
  • Why I choose to read (title of book):
  • What I learned from (title of book):
  • Ways in which (title of book) will contribute to my success upon release:

173. In what ways would writing similar book reports contribute to the development of your communication skills and preparations for success upon release?

It shows all that you have learned in the books that you have read. Also it helps in your communication skills by learning new words and how they are used.
